Poland is located in central Europe. The official language of the country is Polish. There are many similarities between the Polish and the American culture, in terms of relationships. The Polish traditions however, do have a strong impact on the behavioral patterns.
Traditional Roles of Men and Women
The Polish society is very traditional and adheres to its customs strongly. Both sexes have a very traditional approach towards each other. Polish culture is highly influenced by traditional Slavic norms and Roman Catholicism.
The First Date in Polish Society
When a man meets a woman for the first time it is acceptable for him to kiss her hand. Kissing the cheeks is a sign of familiarity. So when a man gets to know the woman better he can kiss her both cheeks. The man is supposed to pay the bill for the meal or whatever else needs to be paid for, on the first date. However, the woman may decide to share the expenses from the next meeting onwards.
The continental influence in Polish table manners is very prominent. The fork is to be held in the left hand while the knife goes in the right hand. Soups are an integral part of the Polish menu, due to long winters. Hence if you are dating a Polish lady, you have to keep such things in mind to present yourself as well mannered person.
Conversation on a First Date
The Polish people are highly educated. So, according to the Polish customs it is desirable for them to show an interest in each other’s occupations. The educational qualification is an appropriate topic to be discussed on the first date. The jobs of both the friends can also be discussed comfortably. Paying attention to each other is very important. Paying attention to details in the other person’s conversation and picking out hints to further the conversation from it is an intelligent thing to do. Never boast about your education or material assets. The Polish people are penny wise as they don’t spend foolishly.
Gifts on a First Date
It is preferable to share gifts on first date. In fact the Polish women are accustomed to receiving a small token gift on the first date. A box of chocolates or a flower would be preferable. Expensive gifts should be avoided.
Keeping the traditional backdrop in mind the men should insist on bearing the burden, literally. If the woman is carrying something the man should offer to carry it for her. Adopting the traditional route would be the best option in the Polish society.
